Turning the holiday blues around

For those suffering from unhealthy habits the holidays can be a difficult time of the year. I often hear that to many of us, days like Thanksgiving, St. Nicolas, Diwali, Hanukkah or Christmas are triggers to watch out for. Of course this is not so (see my previous post on triggers). Also, the end of the year is the time for making life changing resolutions to lose weight, stop smoking, stop drinking, and so on. This too is not the most helpful way to recovery and happiness (see this post). So, what can you do to enjoy this time of the year?

First of all let me repeat that it all starts with your thinking. Whether it is a memory or making a resolution to not do something anymore. It is only through thoughts that they either a memory or a resolution, are at all possible. And as you can read all over this blog,  it is thought that gives rise to the way you feel. It really is that simple.

So here is my advise:  as soon as you start to have unpleasant feelings you are receiving a warning signal about your thinking. Apparently you are having unpleasant thoughts. The nice thing is that you can change what you think, and indeed, by shifting mentally to pleasant thoughts, your mood will turn pleasant too. It really works.

Try this: let’s say you think “I hate celebrating Christmas with my family in-law” or take any other similar negative thought. You will notice you will start feeling bad almost immediately.

Now take seven slow and deep breaths and feel the air filling your lungs and exhale calmly. Relax. Now consciously think and mentally say: “I am completely able to enjoy this Christmas season” or you may use any other thought, using a positive affirmation, and repeat this positive thought/affirmation several times, such as: “I am fully and completely able to enjoy this moment right now”.

By keeping your antenna out for any beginning negative feeling, you can immediately apply this easy technique. It will work instantly and you can repeat it as often as you need it. Keep it up for 21 days and it will start to become a “habit” a pattern.  The results can be truly amazing.

And by the way: this does not just work during the holiday season…
